Chapter Twelve

Eris

My mates were stuck to me like glue. Which wasn’t a bad thing, but not having the freedom to go for a walk or even traipse to the woods to use the restroom alone was a bit unsettling. I’d gone from alone most of the time to alone none of the time in a matter of weeks.

“I think my mother is making apple cider and apple butter today,” Oz offered after a breakfast of roasted fruit and nuts.

“I’ve never had either,” I said, taking a plate to the communal wash station. Oz didn’t understand my fascination with the procedure for washing dishes, but I was obsessed with it. The truth was it was fun. Small groups were assigned the task and, as they washed and rinsed, whistling all along, the task became a joy.

I even found myself whistling along.

“My mother would gasp. We must resolve…” Oz stopped talking and came to a halt. He let go of my hand and turned toward the hills. “Something isn’t right.”

Not hearing anything out of the ordinary, I wondered what my mate was talking about. The thought also passed through my mind that he was paranoid after seeing someone prowling around outside the lands just days ago.

“What is it?” I asked after a moment of seeing my mate in distress.

“It’s my father.” The three words poured from his lips in a whisper before I saw his father approaching from the south.

Nothing about Heathcliff’s gait or face gave away any signs of news or trouble, but the evidence was in his widened eyes. They were the same as Oz’s, dark-chocolate brown, warm and inviting.

Oz was correct. Something wasn’t right.

“What is it?” another pack member asked Heathcliff before he could reach us.

He held up a finger for that male to wait and came over closer. “I was out checking the fields. It’s almost time for harvest, but it seems we have been cheated out of some of our crops.”

Oz sighed. “Is it moles? Animals? We can use the garden as bait and hunt them for meat.”

Heathcliff looked at his son. “They were not taken by an animal.”

More of the pack gathered, creating a circle around Oz’s father. His mother came out of her home and joined in. “Mate of mine, what is the matter?”

Heathcliff’s eyes landed on me and at first, I thought he suspected me of thievery.

No way in hell I would ever steal from this pack. It was my pack now. Our pack. Me and my two mates as strange as that still sounded to me.

“It wasn’t an animal, brothers and sisters. It was cut from the root. The rest plucked neatly from the vine.”

Gasps bellowed out through the pack. Oz took my hand in his, and Nero took the other. I hadn’t even known he was near until I felt his rough fingers link with mine. “Stay close to us, mate.”

As one, we traveled to the fields. Even from a distance, I could see the bald spots in the rows where someone had taken it upon themselves to reap the rewards of someone else’s work.
